Abstract

The most extensive and comprehensive book ever written about Netherlands ducats. The book is based on a database of 20,000 records collected during five years of research. The first volume (352 p., A4 paper size) includes all gold ducats minted by the Gelderland mint (1586-1803) and mints of Batenburg, Hedel, ?s-Heerenberg, Stevensweert, Nijmegen, Gorinchem, Groninger Ommelanden, Gronsveld, Haarlem, Middelburg, Vianen, Thorn, Breda and Zierikzee. An important section of the book is dedicated to the Dutch 'Golden Age' of flourishing trade with the Far East and the Baltic states, because it was largely driven by the strength of Dutch gold there. The book presents an enjoyable description of the history of the god ducat, including some interesting facts about foreign imitations - well documented and accompanied by many illustrations. Meanwhile, the descriptions of the individual coins pay considerable attention to where they could be found and the associated price developments. In other words this book will certainly be appreciated by avid collectors and professionals. It is a welcome addition within the numismatic field. Includes also a booklet of 50 pages (ISBN 9788394053406): "Estimated values & die marriages 2015 edition. Based on the rarity scale and realized prices of 20.000 coins sold in Dutch and international auctions from 1945." The most extensive and comprehensive book ever written about Netherlands ducats. Abstract

In July 2014, the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden hosted the second Dorestad congress, exactly five years after the first. This congress was attached to the exhibition Golden Middle Ages: The Netherlands in the Merovingian World, 400-700 AD and brought together scholars to discuss these 'Dark Ages', their burials and settlements, rituals and identities, and the position of the Low Countries in the world-wide networks of early-medieval Europe. The congress opened with a keynote lecture by dr. Gareth Williams (The British Museum). Sessions were devoted to key themes like early-medieval identity and agency, so-called royal burials in Europe, significant find categories like garnets, coins and Merovingian glass, important new sites and finds from the Low Countries and recent work in the Carolingian ‘vicus famosus’ of Dorestad.

Abstract

Abstract

Transl. by Diane Webb. 0In 'Europe within reach' Gerrit Verhoeven traces some sweeping evolutions in the early modern travel behaviour of Dutch and Flemish elites (1585-1750), as the classical Grand Tour was slowly but surely overshadowed by other types of travelling. 0Leisure trips to Paris, London or Berlin, a cours pittoresque along the Rhine, domestic trips in the Low Countries and a series of other destinations gained ground, while new sorts of travellers cropped up: female and middle-class travellers, domestic servants, children, youngsters and the elderly. 0Verhoeven does not only trace these evolutions, but also explains why Netherlandish travellers gradually turned into art connoisseurs; why they were spellbound by sites of memory and by rugged landscapes; or why all sorts of fashionable gadgets and thingies were bought on the way.
